In this inspiring video, board-certified dance/movement therapist Erica Hornthal leads a dance/movement therapy session at CJE Senior Life in Evanston, Illinois. The footage demonstrates the benefits of dance/movement therapy with physically and cognitively impaired older adults are much more than just physical.
The movements and movement patterns – which tend to be more gestural and symbolic for this population – foster social interaction, sense of self, reminiscence, relaxation, and feelings of empowerment. Dance/movement therapy “unlocks their potential,” says Hornthal, and helps the participants to feel stronger and more in control of their bodies and minds.
