#GivingTuesday is about Giving Back with Dance/Movement Therapy
Now in its third year, the American Dance Therapy Association’s (ADTA) #GivingTuesday Grant program is a partnership with the Marian Chace Foundation (MCF), and is funded primarily by the donations of the dance/movement therapy community. Much larger than ADTA, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving, fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
Dance/Movement Therapy Advocacy and Education
Each year, ADTA #GivingTuesday Grants sponsor professionals in dance/movement therapy as they engage in advocacy and education initiatives within their community. Grant recipients work with community organizations to develop innovative dance/movement therapy services for underserved populations. In 2015 – 2016, the #GivingTuesday Grant was used to serve Veterans; see the video below for a glimpse of the work and process dance/movement therapists and their participants created and experienced.
The purpose of ADTA’s #GivingTuesday Grant is to: provide dance/movement therapy advocacy, education, and experience by offering services to underserved individuals and groups who could benefit from access; to educate the public about the benefits of dance/movement therapy; and to increase job opportunities for ADTA members and credentialed dance/movement therapists. For their time, commitment, and service, each grant recipient receives a small stipend for their project and services within the community. Additional funds raised cover photography, videography, administrative supplies, and marketing materials for the events.
Outreach to Refugees: Fostering Connection and Belonging
With the 2017 – 2018 initiative, “Outreach to Refugees: Fostering Connection & Belonging,” our grant recipient will provide an in-service training to staff at a local organization, as well as facilitate multiple group sessions for refugees receiving services at the community organization.
Over the past three years, ADTA’s #GivingTuesday fundraising campaign has sponsored five grant projects, provided services to over 100 individuals, and educated over 200 staff about the profession of dance/movement therapy and ADTA. Contributions allow the continued growth of ADTA’s grants and advocacy initiatives in the coming year.
To celebrate ADTA’s 52nd Birthday, consider a donation of $5.20. If 1,000 supporters contributed, the ADTA would raise $5,200 for the 2017-2018 grant and beyond.
