Registered Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT)
As of January, 2018, all applications and support materials MUST be submitted electronically to the DMTCB. If you have already submitted or in the process of submitting by mail, please continue to do so and your application will be accepted.
Registered Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT) acknowledges the attainment of a basic level of competence in dance/movement therapy, achieved through the completion of dance/movement therapy education and training. The R-DMT signifies both the first level of entry into the profession and the individual’s preparedness for employment as a dance/movement therapist within a clinical and/or educational setting.
There are 2 “routes,” or ways, to obtain the training needed to become a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT). After obtaining the R-DMT, one may continue working toward becoming a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMT).
1. ADTA Approved Graduate Programs meet all of the educational requirements for the Registered Dance/Movement Therapy (R-DMT) credential. The ADTA approves programs that meet the requirements described in the ADTA Approval Standards for Graduate Dance/Movement Therapy Programs. Graduates from Approved Programs are recognized by the DMTCB and granted the R-DMT upon completion of the R-DMT Approved Program Application.
2. The ADTA and Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board also recognize an Alternate Route to dance/movement therapy registry (R-DMT). The Alternate Route requires a masters degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning in combination with specific general training and dance/movement therapy coursework, a fieldwork experience and a DMT internship.
RECERTIFICATION: R-DMT certificants must complete 50 hours (clock hours) of Continuing Education every 5 years.
